Tulsa is our blog’s first media review. This almost feels like cheating considering it is a movie we found on Pure Flix. This movie is heavily advertised on YouTube and caught our attention. Needless to say, the movie is not overhyped; it is an entertaining watch that Christian and non-Christian parents could enjoy. We will try not to spoil anything; but no promises. Let’s dive in.
Tulsa is a 9-year-old girl who loves Jesus despite her circumstances in life. It is amazing to watch her faith play out and impact everyone around her.
“But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”
2 Timothy 4:5 NIV
Early in the film, Tulsa, a foster child, appears in the life of Tommy, an addict. She claims she knows Tommy is her biological father and with nowhere else to turn, they somehow become roommates. There is a lot of reluctance on his part, but it grows into love for the little girl like only a father could have for his daughter.
If anyone has ever watched a Pure Flix movie, you will know that you could never have a Hallmark ending. There are many plot twists, tragedies, and adult topics covered. From a discernment standpoint, there is no profanity, nudity, or sexual innuendo; however, there is alcohol abuse, substance abuse, and cigarette use. Early on, there is a scene where Tommy holds a gun and the viewers are led to believe that he was contemplating suicide. Ever later, there is a flashback of someone committing suicide.
The message of God is strong in this one. There are many passages of Scripture read aloud by Tulsa, and she finds a church and befriends the bishop. She evangelizes to many people, including children. Tulsa is a great main character and a good role model for little girls.
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”
1 Peter 3:15 NIV
We don’t know if we would share this movie with our children until they were old enough to understand the more mature topics covered in the film.
All in all, we give this movie our highest recommendation.
9/10
