The second chapter of Proverbs begins with the reader being told that they must want and desire wisdom. We must cry for it, search for it, and then God will grant us wisdom.
“My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands.”
Proverbs 2:1 NLT
From reading the first line, God, the “I”, makes it clear that the path to wisdom begins by respecting and listening to him. By doing these things, reading and holding these proverbs close to your heart, you will begin to understand what right, just, and fair. You will be filled with joy, and be kept safe. Wisdom will allow you to discern between evil people and the right path.
“Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose words are twisted.”
Proverbs 2:12 NLT
“Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman. She has abandoned her husband and ignores the covenant she made before God. Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to the grave. The man who visits her is doomed. He will never reach the paths of life.”
Proverbs 2:16-19
This paragraph meant more to us than wisdom about adulterous acts. Yes, in Deuteronomy 5, we are told to not commit adultery. I, Brock, took this as teaching against other bad actions. While this woman sounds tempting, many wrong actions sound tempting and are attractive. Someone may work night shift and because their boss is not around; they take a nap. They don’t get caught, but their Heavenly Father knows what they did. Evil is tempting. Sometimes it is easier. Sometimes it is beautiful. Satan knows our weaknesses and is always waiting to exploit them. God is spelling out the consequences in this passage.
The chapter ends with the reader being instructed to follow the steps of the good. The original reader, Israel, is told only the godly will live in the land and the wicked will be removed. But to us Christians, I understand this as a way to get to Heaven. When God says, only the godly will live in the land, the land referenced is not Israel or anywhere on Earth, but is the land that our Heavenly Father is in. So, follow these commands, and you will ultimately enter Heaven.
