Bible Study: Proverbs 7

Most of what was written up to this point in the Book of Proverbs was a series of instructions for us to follow to be wise. I like to think of it as Life’s Instruction Manual. This chapter takes a different approach. There is an entire story told warning us not to give in to adultery. It is the easiest read in the book, in my opinion. Reading it made me realize the importance of being faithful to one’s spouse. So many people are affected when adultery takes place. The adulterer is likely to lose respect from his children and other family members. The wife of the adulterer will be emotionally and psychologically devastated. The woman involved in the adulterous act may also feel what the wife feels; albeit for a different reason.

“So listen to me, my sons,

and pay attention to my words.

Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her.

Don’t wander down her wayward path.”

Proverbs 7:24-25 NLT

All of these and so many others, I believe, are the reason why God wants us to understand the importance of faithfulness to our spouse. We are to love our spouse just as Jesus loved the church. We know we are not perfect like Jesus and cannot accomplish this, but we are to come as close as possible to this. Remember, the meaning of Christian is being Christ-like.

“For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.”

Ephesians 5:25 NLT

This is a short chapter and further emphasizes the importance of not being tempted by an adulterous man or woman and being faithful to your spouse. Society and those in open relationships need to take note and understand how amazing and beautiful marriage is and cherish what they have. Society would be a much happier place.

“‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has joined together.”

Mark 10:7-9 NLT
